NAS: A Day in the Life

It's 2015 and Tuesday so that means that we are back at the Not Alone Series!  A huge thanks to Jen and Morgan for hosting and for helping all of us ladies gather together to remember that we aren't broken, we aren't alone, and we are loved by God.

Let's get back in the swing by sharing what our typical day is like! Tell us however you like, minute by minute or a blurb about your day! Be sure to answer these questions:
- What is your favorite part of your day?
- What is your least favorite part of your day?
- Are you making any changes to your daily routine now that the new year has begun?

Well my typical day use to be not so typical, but then I took a huge leap and got a new job that is a lot eaiser to have a routine that is pretty set.  I am someone who loves routine, I crave stability, and although I can make changes into my routine, they have to be determined by me to stick.  So a typical day?

I set my alarm to go off at 6:46am, I get out of bed to turn it off and crawl back in for two more snoozes before rolling out on my knees for morning prayer.  Usually my next step is coffee, but since I just started a Whole30 yesterday, this has become a morning tea.  Shower, getting ready, reading, praying, watching some tv, getting my lunch together and leaving the house around 8:50am.

I get to work by 9am, go to Daily Mass at 12:15pm, and work until 5pm.

After work I basically do the same things, just sometimes in a different order.  Cook Dinner, do a few yoga videos, watch some tv, read...  In the evenings this year I have a Living Your Strengths Small Group on Tuesdays beginning tonight for 6 weeks.  On 1st & 3rd Wednesdays I lead a Spirituality Group for young adults at one of my favorite bakeries, Amelie's.

I usually go to bed by 11, sometimes earlier, depends on how tired I am.  In the midst of all that, I try to take some time to be quiet, a rosary (usually in the car), and maybe some social media mixed in.

My favorite part of the day is from noon to 1pm when I get to attend Daily Mass.  This has been a pretty long habit of mine that I don't really remember why I began, but now I cannot even imagine stopping.  I think it began in college when I was the sacristan a few days a week one semester and then I just found that it was the only real way to keep some semblance of peace in my heart and soul.  I've been very blessed to work at places where this is possible, churches with good Mass times - the 12:15pm is a beautiful thing!

Is it bad to say "waking up" is my least favorite part of the day?  It's not that I don't want to get started on the day, but that my bed is so comfortable and lovely, I just love to snuggle up in there!

For the New Year, I am not really changing my routine except for the things that I'm eating.  With the Whole30, I'm trying to kick a pretty severe sugar addiction.  One cookie is never enough, I can always justify one more, just one more.  I'd also like to see if the lack of dairy helps with the acne on my face and the no gluten maybe gets me on a better track to eat more veggies and good for me things rather than filling up on pasta.  A nutritional re-set for my body.

We shall see - 2 days down, 28 days to go!  I'll have to choose which of these new habits will be staying and which foods I'll integrate back in to my diet after the 30 days are complete.

See you back here next week for a new topic, not sure what it is - but Jen's got the info since she's hosting, Morgan's supporting!

Happy Tuesday!

  1. I am right there with you with the whole sugar addiction thing. Not on the whole30 bandwagon right now but defiantly need to do something. (Honestly, I write this directly after eating three cookies. Honesty is the best policy.)

    1. And those cookies sound so delicious! I first got the idea of no sugar (and what it does to us) from the book "Year of No Sugar" - a woman who took her husband and kids on a year long journey. I did not go as drastic as her, but do notice I'm a better person without it. So if you're interested in the 'whys' of no added sugar, I recommend her book.

Also a friend told me about her sister-in-law who whenever she makes something sweet she cuts the amount of sugar in the recipe in half, every time. I tried it in cookies over the weekend and they were actually even more delicious, so if you're doing the baking, might be an easy way to start!

I do love something sweet, oh, and it's so addictive!

  2. Good luck with the Whole30! I did one last fall. It was hard, but lately I have been eating too much sugar again, so maybe I should do a Whole7 or something to get back on track. :) Also, is it wrong to say I'm a little jealous of the girls who get to go to daily Mass? It doesn't work in my schedule at all now, but I loved attending daily Mass in college. Someday I will again!

    1. Thanks for stopping by! If I get super bored with recipes (only on day 3 now), I'll be coming your way!

  3. You are always so positive and supportive of NAS... I just love it. :) And you.

Ohhhhh good luck with the Whole30! I am really loving your pics on IG! Yummy, yummy! Let me know how it goes with your acne!

Also, SUPER jealous that you are able to go to Mass every day!

    1. I'll definitely let you know. I hope it has lots of positive effects all around, not just my face!

  4. Love it! I've been hearing a lot about Whole30, so I'd love to hear more about how it goes for you! It would probably be impossible being in college since I can't control my options all the time, but it's something I would consider doing afterward. Looking forward to hearing more! It's awesome that daily mass is a habit for you!

    1. You'd probably be stuck eating salads ALL of the time since you don't know what's going into your food. Thinking of my college cafeteria, I can definitely see that. Also it's a little more expensive that regular groceries usually are for me - needing to buy tons of vegetables (I spent $20 on green veggies yesterday after work) and meat - which are things that are usually not on my grocery list because they are so expensive! I'll keep y'all updated via the blog!

  5. I just started a whole30 on Sunday (I've done one previously, and it was good but that was a few years ago). It's such a food adjustment because I'm such a sugar fiend. (I did the 21 day Sugar Detox last February but that only lasted me for about 2 months). Good look with the Whole 30!

    1. Good Luck with your Whole30! It's been an adjustment just a few days, I'm just afraid of being bored. Finding something I like (for instance sweet potato hash with eggs) and eating it all the time ... I want to have a good variety.

  6. Daily Mass is a great habit for me too, I really cannot imagine my day without it. I think I should probably reduce my sugar I am definitely addicted, I might just try your suggestion above of cutting the amount in half to see if I survive first.

    1. I was pretty skeptical when my friend told me that, and then I made sugar cookies with half the sugar and they were delightful, even better than the original. Although I think I may have made an excuse to have twice as many!

  7. Yes! I'm very centered on routine as well. Without my routine, I ache for it. Work has been super non-structured after my old boss transferred to a new job over the summer, and I'm still working on getting a sense of organization for the responsibilities that he left with me and my new boss. Prayers for guidance for my job would be hugely appreciated!

    1. My work routine is also a little off right now. There's much to do, but not always spread out throughout the week. Be assured of my prayers for sure!

  8. I did not realize you had blogged your routine also until just now! love it! :)

NAS: Travel

How do you travel as a single lady?! Any tips or tricks you'd like to share? Do you have anything fun planned for this year? Multiple times per week when I'm brushing my teeth in the morning I think about how boring my life is, how I never go anywhere. To be honest that is a complete and utter lie. I mean between July 2013 and March 2014, I hung out on four different continents - let along the time I spent traveling around the U.S. to Denver, New York City, Savannah, Orlando, and my parent's place. I'm the girl who bought a plane ticket to Africa and went into the bush all alone. (it's a great story ) Let me type that again - I went to the Congo, alone! I still can't even believe that I did that - it's the craziest thing ever ... but the most amazing experience of my life. So my off the cuff tips for traveling alone, they aren't super original, so be prepared to be underwhelmed! If you want to go somewhere, just do it - buy the ti
